History of the Library
Founded in 1879 it remained initially housed in the Sadharan Brahmo Samaj Mandir premises before it was removed to a rented house of its own. Maharshi Devendranath Tagore came forward with a large donation for that purpose. A reading room was also opened in the Library which was also a place for hosting various seminars and meetings, which also served as the meeting ground for the members of Congregation, especially for new inquirers.
Pandit Sivnath Sastri played an important role in setting up the library. He writes in his autobiography Atmacharit In 1894 Dr. Prasanna Kumar Roy became the Secretary of the Calcutta Congregation.
For the ease of use of the Acharya and the congregation a library was set up. I made my office over there and carried on my duties as a minister. The library later shifted to the present location in 1925.
